Teaching IFP is a key component of the Master of Fine Arts program here at Johns Hopkins. Through this course, undergraduate students learn the fundamentals of creative writing through assignments in fiction and poetry.

Readings from the The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction and the The Norton Anthology of Poetry provide additional perspectives on the art of writing. These reading assignments supplement the regular writing assignments (ten total: five poetry and five fiction).

In addition to the creative assigments, students submit two literary essays. In these essays, they discuss works from the most recent Hopkins Review.

The final weeks of the course are dedicated to revisions and workshops, culminating in the submission of the Ten Page Whole Story and a Portfolio of all coursework.
