Welcome to the Content Resource Page of 1-2-Writing

At its heart, 1-2-Writing is built around the creative writing workshop. Yet a critical component of any workshop - be it about writing long narratives or short, direct poems - is a common language for the discussion of writing. To develop this understanding of writing, we are dedicated to providing you with creative writing resources to help you reach your goals.

We want you to write your best stories, poems, and memoirs, and we hope that you enjoy the life that comes along with creativity. Yet we understand that writing is a challenging endeavor. Throughout the site, we'll provide insights on writing through articles on a variety of topics. Sometimes, our focus will be on Specific Writing Techniques you can use to strengthen your work. Other articles will explore the Writing Life - the joys, the challenges, and what to do when you're ready to publish. Throughout the site, we'll also include links to Recommended Books (and, sometimes, books we Don't Quite Recommend).

Down below and to the right, you'll find links to the major topic categories of the website. In addition, you may scroll down to read more on how to contribute to our community by Submitting Articles of your own.. If you are interested in membership to 1-2-Writing - which includes full access to our member forums and online writing support - you'll be especially interested in the Article Requirements for Membership further down the page.

Please feel free to browse around and to let me know what you think. If you have any topic of interest you'd like to see covered more, let me know. We're here to provide you the most helpful information we can, and we'll gladly post material to suit your interests. And, if we don't have the information that will help you, we'll do our best to post a link to either books or websites where you find additional help. To get in touch with me, simply click the link to the right to send a message.

Don't Stress over Meter

Shakespeare made iambic pentameter into a household word, but many writers still dread the idea of writing it. There's no reason to worry - meter occurs naturally in languages such as English and German, and it's an integral component of literature in these languages. Here are some tips to help you feel Unstressed Over Meter.

Young Writers Need and Deserve Our Support

Sometimes, I hear something along the lines of "these bad writers need to be told to get out while they still can. They're just setting themselves up for disappointment."

Words like this send a chill down my spine. Please read about the Dangers of Discouraging Young Writers.

Submit Articles

As a writer, it is my personal belief that we are all of us students of writing - every writer has something still to learn, and all writers have something to teach. If you are here reading this, then you are a writer, and you have unique perspectives and experiences to share.

I invite all visitors to submit articles for our website. Besides offering the opportunity of Membership in 1-2-Writing, writing an article for online publication offers many benefits for yourself as a writer and the writing community as a whole. First, you gain valuable experience expressing yourself and in working for publication (see below for our Editorial Guidelines).

Article Requirements for Membership

Would you like to join as a full-fledged member of 1-2-Writing? Please consider that one of our preferred membership routes is through submitting original content to www.12writingworkshopsonline.com. As mentioned above, this benefits both yourself and the writing community.

In the interests of full disclosure, your articles will provide a real benefit to the website, giving us more information to post and hence leading to better search rankings for the site. This is critical for our expansion. In general, most new members will discover 1-2-Writing through search engines such as Google and Yahoo. In order to place highly in the search rankings and then to keep the interest of those who visit, we must maintain engaging content which is updated regularly. In the past, I've done very poorly on this front, and part of the reason was that I tried to expand the site entirely by myself. My goal is to avoid this mistake in the future. Instead, I would like to foster a community of writers, a place where we work together to grow an develop as writers. By submitting an article to the website, you make a material investment in bettering not only the 1-2-Writing website, but also the readers who share in what you've posted.

As you can see, this "free" membership actually contributes a great deal to the website. Also, there may be a significant contribution of time. To meet the membership requirements for the site, you'll need to have three articles posted for public viewing on www.12writingworkshopsonline.com. Please note that an article must be accepted for posting before it will count toward the membership requirement.

All articles must meet our Editorial Guidelines and Online Publication Policy below. Articles may be on any topic regarding creative writing, or they may be creative works such as short stories, poems, or memoirs. An article should be a minimum of 800 words (depending on quality and circumstances, this requirement can be waived - please check first). There is no word limit on articles - if you tend to write long, a single piece may count as more than one article for membership requirements.

Something I'd like to mention - for some authors, the idea of posting an article or a story for viewing by the public is very, very difficult. If you cannot imagine posting online, but you are also unable to pay for membership or writing courses, please let me know (especially if you are a student or a minor). I want to include everyone who is interested in the site, and I may be able to accept longer works which will not be posted in lieu of the three article requirement.

Fiction - The Art of Telling the Story

Are you writing a novel? Do you love short stories? Learn techniques on developing plot, characters, setting, and other valuable skills by visiting our Fiction Page.

Poetry Is Ambrosia for the Soul

And I highly recommend it for any student of writing. For tips and resources, visit our Poetry Resources Page. Understanding poetic technique is important - it teaches us to write sentences that resonate. It isn't enough to have good narrative and tension and characterization - you want to write stories that make the reader forget it's all a printed dream. And poetry can help you produce lines that glide off the pen and into the reader's soul.

The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

Are you considering the benefits of an MFA? Would you like two or three years dedicated to improving your writing? Then visit our MFA Resource Page to learn about the pros and cons of MFA programs, whether to apply for full-residency or low-residency, and how to make the most of your experience once you get there.

Do You Like to Teach?

1-2-Writing Editorial Guidelines

As an open-source resource for all writers, we are firmly against censorship, and we are strong proponents of both intellectual and artistic freedom. However, in order to provide material which is relevant and effective, 1-2-Writing follows essential editorial guidelines regarding the content and quality of material posted on our site.

All works posted will be generally free of typos and mispellings.

An occasional word or letter may escape the cage of accepted usage, but we will not post material containing a distracting number of typos or misspellings. In cases where there are only a few misplaced letters, we may make the necessary corrections. If there are more corrections than can be reasonably edited, the article will be returned to the author unposted - the author is free to resubmit after the article has been sufficiently revised.

All works must follow the standards of general English usage, including standards of grammar and style.

The Elements of Style by Strunk and White is strongly recommended as a resource for any writer who has questions regarding style or usage.

Currently, the editorial board consists of a single American (myself, Ryan), but we remain open to standard British usage and spelling in our articles. Although I do not use British spelling myself, I believe that all writers should be familiar with how English is used around the world.

All works (at present) will be in English

Unfortunately, we are not currently equipped to accept works in languages other than English, though I will gladly provide assistance with editing if English is not your primary language. Ideally, I'd like to post articles from all corners of the globe. If there is sufficient interest in posting additional languages (mainly an editor familiar enough with the language), I would certainly welcome the chance to post articles in additional languages. I can assist with German and Arabic, but I do not have native proficiency.

All works will directly address topics in creative writing.

I encourage essays, stories, poems, memoirs, and other works of any length. However, we are specifically a website for teaching and writing creative works.

All works will be judged on merit.

Although creative writing is a subjective field, I know from experience that some works are better than others. I cannot predict beforehand which works will meet the standards set for the site. A work turned down for publication here may be returned with comments for improvement. After revision, I encourage you to resubmit.

Editing will be consistent, but every work submitted is different.

I will do my best to maintain consistent editing throughout the site. However, the editorial guidelines will be adjusted as needed to match the needs of the work. For works which feature characters who speak in dialect, or poems which follow their own needs for usage, I will err on the side of art rather than the side of "editorial perfection" (as if there ever was such a thing).

--1-2-Writing will credit you as the source in all links and postings which include your article or refer to it. Your promoted websites will be included on any site page which includes your article. Your e-mail address will not be posted online unless you specifically request this in writing. If you like, I will post an online form which will allow readers to contact you directly through the website using a secondary e-mail account.

--Unless otherwise specified, all works submitted to www.12writingworkshopsonline.com will be posted as open-source content freely available for any interested parties. 1-2-Writing will provide no monetary compensation for works submitted unless a prior agreement is made in writing.

--1-2-Writing will maintain non-exclusive internet publication rights for your article. I encourage you to post your work on your own website and to a reasonable number of additional sites with which you are personally affiliated, but I ask that you do not distribute for widespread publication across the internet. If you do publish your article elsewhere (e.g. blogs, open-source indices, etc.), please include a link with your article to www.12writingworkshopsonline.com. Also, please let me know - I'll gladly post links to other sites presenting your article.

--You agree to accept the privacy policies and practices of all third-party affiliate services to which 1-2-Writing subscribes (e.g. Amazon, GoogleAds, and AllPosters). 1-2-Writing will not share your e-mail address or other identifying information with these services.

--1-2-Writing will not post your article to any site other than www.12writingworkshops.com. 1-2-Writing does not take part in third-party content distribution, and no submitted work will ever be submitted to such services. However, your article may be indexed through third-party internet search engines (e.g. Google) at the request of 1-2-Writing or due to the open-source nature of www.12writingworkshopsonline.com. 1-2-Writing may also post direct links to your article on third-party websites, but all such links will specify you by name and will include no more content than the title and the topic of your article.

--1-2-Writing has no control over external reviews or critiques of your article undertaken by third-party websites and will take no responsibility for their content or opinions. 1-2-Writing reserves the right to post public-access reviews and critiques of your work. Any such reviews submitted by outside authors will be bound by the same guidelines specified here.

--All views and opinions expressed in submissions to www.12writingworkshopsonline.com remain the sole property of the submitting author, and 1-2-Writing takes no responsibility for the personal preferences or recommendations of submitting authors. Excessive profanity, lewd or disparaging comments, and defamatory remarks will not be permitted on www.12writingworkshopsonline.com. Due to the artistic nature of certain works (e.g. fiction, poetry, memoir, etc.), 1-2-Writing may post works which may be deemed inflamatory or inappropriate by some individuals, and 1-2-Writing takes full responsibility for the artistic judgement regarding publication. 1-2-Writing reserves the right to post warnings and disclaimers regarding any work deemed to require parental consent or other considerations prior to reading.

--We are committed to an atmosphere free of physical and emotional threat.

By it's very nature, art often contains very strong emotional themes, and I encourage all authors to address the difficult issues that face us as individuals and as a society. However, addressing issues in a literary or artistic manner should not cross the line of encouraging violence or discrimation toward others. No submissions will be accepted which overtly promote physical, sexual, or emotional violence toward others. Any articles which promote discrimination on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, race, nationality, or ethnicity will also be removed from consideration. Serious or repeat submissions of this nature may result in the loss of membership and all privileges associated with 1-2-Writing. All decisions regarding this matter will be at the sole discretion of 1-2-Writing. No refunds will be given for individuals removed from membership or a workshop due to article submissions which violate this policy.

This said, understand that this policy is far more lenient for submissions than for direct posting in the membership or public areas of the website. If you would like to post anything - anything at all - and you are uncertain if it's appropriate, please let me know. I will not penalize anyone for inquiry.

--1-2-writing reserves the right to remove any article from the site at any time.

--Any questions regarding these guidelines should be addressed to the 1-2-Writing Website Administrator:
