The Writing Workshop Classroom Experience

I will be honest - I have not enjoyed every writing workshop I've ever taken. In fact, I have not enjoyed every workshop that I've led. On the whole, I credit writing workshops with a great deal of the progress I've made in my writing, but some of the courses I've taken have felt like a waste of my time and money.

When this happens, the most common complaint among my classmates is that "the instructor doesn't know what he's doing." And I've heard this charge leveled against successfully published and respected authors, individuals who clearly know a great deal about writing. However, great writers don't necessarily understand the fine art of teaching. When this charge of ignorance is leveled against an experienced creative writing instructor, the reason often has more to do with teaching style than writing knowledge. This is why classroom management is one of the most important skills to master for any workshop leader.
